Lifting your leg into the chamber position before throwing your kick allows you to re-assess your situation. Is your opponent still in strike range? Will your kick reach the power you hoped? What position will this movement put you in? These are all questions you should be assessing during this time.
The Machado Method
Once your opponent has you in the Z-guard, several opportunities arise for them, which means you need to act fast. Master Machado demonstrates how you should keep a strong base, position yourself to avoid leg and arm attacks while neutralizing the guard so you can 'melt through it'.
You primary objective while defending yourself from an uppercut is to protect your head and prevent your opponent from punching down the middle. Gabriel explains how his favorite method, not only protects your head from uppercuts, but also straight shots down the middle, and swinging hooks from the side.
Learn how to pass the guard using the 'double under' approach from both standing or low level positions. Master Carlos Machado explores many avenues that allow you to 'melt the guard', while still applying the concept of Stance, Control, and Pressure.
"Maintaining stability and distance is crucial for the roundhouse kick," says 6X Kickboxing World Champion, Gabriel Varga. Similar to the front kick, pivoting your foot enables your hips to swing into your kick. On top of mastering the kicking/pivoting techniques, you must also be aware of potential attacks while you strike. Gabriel speaks to how you can protect yourself mid-kick by raising your hands and leaning further back to give yourself distance.
"One of the first things you want to learn about throwing a proper front kick is distance," says 6X Kickboxing World Champion, Gabriel Varga. Without balance you will feel that you need to rush your decision, sacrificing your power and stability.
“The surfer stance is a great method to maintain your balance and increase the pressure once you have broken your opponent’s closed guard”, says Master Carlos Machado. This stance allows you to dominate one of your opponent's shins using your knee, using pressure to control the hip and start melting the guard.
