UFC on FOX 9: Team Hayabusa Breakdown
The UFC takes over Sacramento, California this Saturday as Demetrious Johnson defends his flyweight title for the third time against challenger, Joseph Benavidez.
These top flyweight fighters rematch after going five rounds at UFC 152 where Johnson remained champion via a split decision. Originally, new lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis was set for his first title defence against T.J. Grant, but a knee injury caused the bout to be postponed. The event also lost another anticipated main card fight as Matt Brown dropped out due to injuries, cancelling Brown vs. Condit.
Rounding off the main card is Urijah Faber (29 - 6) vs. Michael McDonald (16 - 2), Chad Mendes (15 - 1) vs. Nik Lentz (24 - 5 - 2, 1 NC) and Joe Lauzon (22 - 9) vs. Mac Danzig (21 - 11 - 1).
Team Hayabusa in Action
Court McGee (16 - 3) vs. Ryan LaFlare (9 - 0)
Former Ultimate Fighter winner, Court McGee faces UFC newcomer, Ryan LaFlare in this welterweight match up. McGee enters the fight on two consecutive wins after rebounding from back-to-back losses in 2012. LaFlare has left his first two octagon fights victorious, defeating both Ben Alloway and Santiago Ponzinibbio via unanimous decision earlier this year.
Bobby Green (21 - 5) vs. Pat Healy (31 - 16)
Strikeforce veteran, Bobby “The King” Green quickly accepted his third UFC battle against lightweight contender, Pat Healy, after Jamie Varner dropped out due to injuries. Green comes to the fight strong with six consecutive victories, winning two out of two in the UFC. Last month fans saw him defeat James Krause via an impressive TKO in the first round.
Healy, a fellow Strikeforce fighter has also appeared twice inside the octagon but with a much different result. His most recent fight went to Khabib Nurmagomedov via unanimous decision while his official UFC debut was scored a no contest after testing positive for marijuana.
Scott Jorgensen (14 - 7) vs. Zach Makovsky (16 - 4)
Former Bellator champion and reigning Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA) titleholder Zach Makovsky makes his UFC debut against fellow bantamweight fighter, Scott Jorgensen. Makovsky comes to the UFC riding two decision wins from past fighting organizations.
Jorgensen enters with a high-profile submission loss to Urijah Faber at the The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale and only one victory out of his last four fights. Zach Makovsky gears up in the Hayabusa Haburi™ Compression during his first appearance ever inside the octagon.
